Who doesn’t!?
Part of the fun of making craft is buying the craft supplies.
I have found that to not go over board I have a standard rule across my hobbies, as I do have many hobbies.
Are you ready to hear my hobby rule?
Here it is: Have enough supplies to last a year per hobby.
Ok, so that may either be terrifying for you to hear or welcoming.
Here is why I stick with the one year rule.
1. When I have one year’s worth of supplies, I have to have enough storage to hold it.
Because it’s a year, it doesn’t become overwhelming hard to store the mass supplies.
I find a year’s supplies is just enough to house for my hobby. For example, I have a year supply of scrap booking supplies. For this, I have a set of five draws and two tubs. In each draw, I have different items. For example, one draw is filled with stickers and another draw washi tape. I have two levels in the draw of washi tape. I literally can’t fit anymore washi tape in the draw so it means I can’t buy anymore. If I did I would have to buy another set of draws!
2. When I have one year’s worth of supplies, I no longer need to buy more for supplies for that hobby. I can buy new supplies for other hobbies.
So, if you are like me and you have more than one hobby. Focusing on just a year of supplies per hobby is a good way to see what hobbies you can still buy for.
For example, I am off and on with diamond painting. For my birthday last year, I decided I was back on to completing diamond paintings and bought a stash. Not a year’s supply but I have just started to get back into it properly for diamond painting. I have about ten diamond paintings I can work on. Is that a years supply? Well if it takes me about a month to complete one, then I just need to buy two more to gain a year’s supply.
So it’s just a year to stop buying supplies and then when you run out, you have a whole new year of supplies to buy for! Let the shopping begin!
3. When I have one years worth of supplies, I can focus on the right type of storage for those supplies.
Storage is just as needed when buying your hobby supplies. After a while and after you have started buying for your hobby, you soon workout what type of storage you need for your supplies. This is very important to find the right type of storage that works for you. Also it helps prevent your year supplies from getting dusty.
The type of storage means you can either showcase your supplies. For crocheting for example, I like to showcase my yarn. Because when I look at yarn, I feel excited and filled with joy. So instead of hiding it in a tub (okay, I do have a tub full of yarn as well), you can display it so each day you get to look at it and be reminded of all the cool things you will make with it.
4. When I have one year’s worth of supplies, should I sell what I no longer need to make more room?
I also love reading and I have a cupboard full of books, some read. I have about 15 unread or half read. So is it fair for me to buy more books? Plus my storage is quite full of books. Should I sell the books I have read and no longer need?
Selling books is definitely an option, for now though I can move these books that I have read to the back of the cupboard. And move these unread books to the front.
So I can clearly see how much storage I have for more books down the track.
5. When I have one year’s worth of supplies, what about the storage for your creations?
If you are like me, I have crochet items for sale, I also have crochet items in progress. So having a place to store these items is also needed.
And this why people have craft rooms. But a craft room isn’t a necessity. I don’t have a craft room but just have my craft surrounding me in my living room, which I love.
So by having a year’s worth of supplies for your hobby and storage solutions, your space for your hobbies doesn’t grow so large that it becomes overwhelming.
And of course, you could change a year’s supply to a six months hobby supply or one month. There are no rules when it comes to hobbies, just have fun!
