As a beginner to crocheting, small projects that are less than 30 minutes to complete are ideal to start with. This way, you literally don’t have to be counting stitches for too long and you can reap the results pretty quickly.
I would suggest, crocheting as many of the same pattern as you like to, to really feel confident with the stitches and the pattern.
So let’s work talk about 8 ideas you can crochet as a beginner:
1. Crocheting a scarf
A scarf is quite sizeable but only requires two stitches if you don’t mind it being curly on the ends. It can take 2-3 weeks completing a scarf which is good practice of your stitches, if you are casually crocheting on it. It may take several hours. But I do recommend, taking crocheting slow at the beginning. It’s a lot of focusing and counting of stitches.
2. Crocheting a sun
A sun only take 30 minutes to crochet but you do have to sew on the edging at the end, otherwise it’s just a yellow circle. You can practice crocheting faces onto the circle part of the pattern or at the end of crocheting the sun. Faces are more scary at the thought of, but once you do a couple you get into a rhythm and then you can’t not crochet a face onto something.
3. Crocheting a blanket
A blanket is a long term project but it’s great if you want to practice your stitches. It can take me about six months to crochet an adult sized blanket. I love crocheting blankets and always have one on the go, even while crocheting other projects. It’s a good one to sit down at night and crochet because you don’t have to count stitches, you can just do the same stitch over and over again. It’s just relaxing. Whereas crocheting objects I prefer to do in the morning because I have to focus and count stitches and change to different stitches.
4. Crocheting a cloud.
I haven’t actually made this yet but it’s on my to do list. I think the cloud looks pretty easy. No sewing involved unless you add a face. And honestly, it’s good practice to add different faces to each cloud you make. I do recommend when learning, you crochet the object about 2-3 times. The first one you are learning so it may not look as good. But if you try again, you learn how to make it better the second time so the result is better.
5. Crocheting Pumpkins
I made pumpkins for Halloween this year and I love them. They are super cute and they look hard but they are not. It’s basically a round shape or close enough to round and then simple sewing to add the lines to the pumpkin. You just thread it in and out and that’s done. The hardest part is the green top of the pumpkin, but if you know the stitches you will be fine.
6. Avoid anything with sewing
Avoid any object that requires sewing. While you are learning. Sewing is hard and you need to practice it over and over and sometimes it still doesn’t work out. So you either find patterns that are no-sew or you crochet the same item five or so times and practice sewing the same item five times. It’s really important in crocheting to practice repetition. It’s the only way to learn and get better.
In my first year I probably jumped from one object to another but my second year crocheting I did the same pattern, in some cases, 20 times.
7. Crochet hearts
Google crocheting hearts for a free pattern. I found crocheting hearts pretty easy. Again, it’s a no-sew pattern. I decided to crochet six in my friends favourite colours. I quite enjoyed crocheting hearts. You just crochet, add some filling and crochet it up and it’s done. It probably took about 45 minutes to crochet. So it’s also a fairly quick project.
8. Crochet a snowman
A snowman is pretty easy. It is basically two circles. Sewn together or you can get no-sew snowman patterns. And then just crochet a thin scarf around its neck. Easy. It does take a bit longer. The pattern I paid for probably took about 1-2 hours to crochet but it’s super cute. And it was pretty easy so that always feels good when crocheting.
You can google to find no-sew crochet patterns to help you get started.
Good luck choosing your crocheting projects to crochet over the holidays and most importantly have fun.
