So as my readers know, I have sold my eBooks on Amazon (all Amazon sites) and also Draft2Digital. Interestingly, not many self-publishers are aware of Draft2Digital but I have seen as much success from book sales from Draft2Digital (D2D) as I have from Amazon.
So why self-publish on both platforms?
Firstly, you will see a greater distribution of your ebooks on a variety of stores. For example D2D has multiple online book stores they promote to, such as Barnes and Noble, Sony, Apple and more.
So your eBook gets promoted on more than just one site. But Amazon also promotes your eBook to their Amazon sites around the world. So your eBook is getting published at multiple places around the world - impressive.
How much do both platforms cost?
Zero dollars.
Yes, it’s free. But this is where I say … sort of free.
Everytime your eBook gets a sale, they (Amazon and D2D) take a percentage of your royalty.
Why this doesn’t matter to me?
Personally, I feel like the online stores are doing a lot of the work. Yes, I made the product but for them to organise the sales. They have the audience/readership already there without me trying to make a billion views on my website to get sales. And they deal with any technical issues the customer may have downloading your product.
I don’t mind paying for this.
So let’s look at it another way. I have been told it or maybe I researched this with trying to get my first book published, is that traditional publishers only give an author 4-25% royalty when a book is sold. This is because they pay for editors, marketing, advertisers etc.
Let's look at royalties for self-publishing:
Amazon generally gives you between 40-70% royalty (this does change but you can do a quick search to determine the royalty).
D2D gives about 40-80% royalty.
Not bad really when you self-publish?
Although, I’m not talking in this post about self-publishing versus traditional-publisher. But to give you an insight into royalties is why I am explaining the above.
So when I marketed my first eBook, Entice Me. I thought I need to get the highest distribution readership so the more people who see my book cover and description the more sales I will get. Sales is a numbers game.
Other things to consider when self-publishing your eBook:
I was originally self-publishing in Smashwords.com which transferred over to D2D. Smashwords eBook formatting guide is fantastic. I still use it because it helps with any technical issues that may occur from buyers downloading or eBook onto an ereader device.
So even now, I use this guide and I believe D2D has their own formatting guide to help you. Amazon does have one as well so I use the Smashwords guide first and then go use Amazon incase I need it different for Amazon.
It takes me about 2 hours to format the ebook, no matter the length of the ebook.
D2D also allows you to give coupons to buyers. I haven’t used this yet but I did with Smashwords and it’s great if you want to give freebies to interviewers or book reviewers.
On D2D your book buyer can also download in different formats such as PDF, epub about five different options, the more versatile your book can be the easier it is for customers.
So if you self-publish onto Amazon Amazon, I suggest you do your research into self-publishing on D2D.
