Making money from craft

So this year, I am looking at making crafts to then sell. I won’t be setting up a market. I will be just selling on Facebook Marketplace and through word of mouth.

I also don’t have too much spare time, just part weekends and at nights but again, not all the time.

So my plan is to build up my stock first so I can sell multiples at a time, rather than make one thing sell it. This way, that one buyer may want to buy multiple items at once and it’s an easier sale than if I was just selling one item at a time.

What is my timeframe to craft and sell?

Like any plan, you need a timeframe to work towards. For me this is a year of crafting to sell. A year because I have a goal to try and save. And I feel a year is enough time to go through the seasons and experiment with colours and types of materials to see what people buy the most of and then produce more of it.

What am I going to craft and sell?

Well I have six years of miniature homes that I have built and they are already for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

Now I am also focusing on my crocheting objects like crocheted ice creams etc and scarves for adults and children for winter. Blanket seem to take me forever to crochet so I won’t be selling blankets.

I will also try and sell my paint by numbers that I have finished painting. And maybe I will paint some future ones to sell as well.

However, I think my main focus in crafting will be through crocheting. And I have bought patterns for crocheting different objects. I did try Facebook groups where they post free crocheting patterns, however I found that these patterns never looked like the picture. Although, I do find the final product does look like the picture with a paid pattern.

In saying that, beware buying paid patterns from Etsy etc as they can be scams and be using AI to create the pattern and then it doesn’t work. However, I have bought some patterns from Etsy and they came out looking so cute.

In terms of pricing

I think a generally craft price for crochet scarves would be $15. I haven’t decided on the crochet objects pricing as yet but will decide once I finish making them.

It takes me about 2-5 hours to crochet an object, for example like a small dinosaur. But scarves I do when relaxing, watching a show or riding in public transport and so far it is taking me 2-3 weeks to crochet a scarf. Hence, why I am starting now in summer so I will have plenty made by the time winter comes.

How to organise your time to craft

Now if you are looking at selling your craft. A calendar is a good idea to write down when you started making an item and when you expect to finish it and then work out when you will make more. This way you can work out by winter for example, how many scarves you will bave made, so you know how many you will have to sell.

Placing a timeframe on a craft project helps keep you motivated to keep going.

How many items you need depends on how much you are aiming to receive in total by the end of the year. And how much you price them.

So are you going to spend a year crafting and then selling?

How I use my home for craft

So my home is decorated by my craft.  For example, I have a craft room where I store my craft supplies and have space to do my craft and then I have in my lounge room showing my craft creations (pictured above) and also storing craft supplies like yarn, where I love to look at and think about the possibilities of what I can do with my craft supplies.  It makes me feel good to come home and be surrounded by my craft.  And it’s ok to never have your craft room finished. For me it’s a work in progress. I am always changing it and my supplies and where to showcase my supplies. This is because my interests change. One month I may be heavily into crocheting so I don’t need a table for that, I can just sit on the couch. I really just need storage for my yarn and crochet needles and my half completed crochet projects such as draws to cater for these.  Another month, I may be into scrapbooking so I do need a table for this, my set of draws for the stickers and tapes and then ...

Crocheting my first blanket

So I decided that crocheting animals etc is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. And I found one. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant. So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled and realised after I do a row of single crochet stitches, I have to do one chain stitch at the end before ...
