Do you have too much arts and craft?

Image by alper omer esin from Pixabay

It’s the age old question, do you have too much arts and craft? It really depends.

Do you have a craft room or space for your craft? Not just to showcase it but to store all the resources to make it?

To be honest, I am in a small space. Which is completely fine. Now it’s small, it feels cluttered and it makes me feel unsure which craft to work on because there are so many on display and it all seems a bit overwhelming.

So I have been really tough and if I am no longer interested in a certain craft, I am going to sell it, give it away or chuck it. I can’t keep it here anymore.

Plus, I don’t mind if my space is filled with craft and lots of it, it just has to be craft I like. And I believe over the years I have accumulated all these different types of arts and crafts.

For Christmas, I gifted myself all different types of earring making equipment, tools and the beads to decorate them with. I went on YouTube on how to make earrings and to be honest, it just feel too hard and overwhelming. Although, I’m sure those who do it often find it truly easy and to be honest I didn’t give it much a go. But I just didn’t want to do it. I don’t know if the beads I had I just didn’t really like or if I just prefer to buy earrings than make them. But yes, nearly six months on, I decided to try and sell them. I have to let it go. I don’t want to do it and seeing it makes me feel guilty and slightly embarrassed.

I also have all these miniature houses that I built years ago. They took me a decent amount of time to make and some of them I really tried and was very patient with them, as it is very fiddly.  I originally had them on display also, but I don’t want to see them. So I have put them up for sale and if they don’t sell I will chuck them. I have put them off display in my house and have replaced them with books.

I do like reading and I find that if I can see the books, I’m more likely to reach for it to read rather than if it was sitting in some storage, waiting for me to go over and look at it.  No thanks, that is way too much effort.

Craft is supposed to be relaxing, fun and full of self-growth. That’s why my crocheting sits on the lounge with me. So I can literally pull it across my body to continue making my blanket. Everything I feel that is in the space needs to be easily accessible and visible.

Everything else that can’t fit in the space, needs to go. It’s obviously not important.

The problem then begins is, if you have items to sell it could take a couple of weeks to sell, so where do you put them in the waiting zone? It really depends what works for you. I either put them in a tub or bags under the table or any clear floor or even on top of a spare table.

Also, put a timeframe on when to sell the item. For example if it doesn’t sell in three weeks, then try to give it away to a friend or to a charity and finally if you can’t, chuck it out.

But to be honest, I have a whole room of things I want to chuck. If that’s the case, you could go to your local dump or chuck out an extra rubbish bag each week (if you have room in your bin). But if you do chuck out an extra bag each week, it is frustrating because you still have a mess where you are storing the rubbish and you can’t feel that feel good feeling of space.

In the end, you do you. If you know you will most likely never do that arts and craft again, then maybe consider moving it out of your home. Fill your home with what you love and that includes all your hobbies. Why waste precious space, with things you no longer like or enjoy?

Crocheting my first blanket

So I decided that crocheting animals etc is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. And I found one. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant. So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled and realised after I do a row of single crochet stitches, I have to do one chain stitch at the end before ...

I crocheted my first scarf

If you are a subscriber to my hobbies YouTube channel @littlemissmel23, last week I posted a video on how to crochet a scarf. I couldn’t show the end result because it was already a long video, so I decided to show you on my blog. I have added the video to this blog post if you are interested in watching it for the pattern.  The final result: The final result is quite good I feel. I did a thin scarf and I ran out of pink yarn so I decided to add white. I’m quite proud of this scarf. I am going to play with the sizing and in particular the width of the scarf.  Now my kids have seen the first scarf, they are wanting me to make them one as well. They even chose the coloured yarn they want. One wants black and then white like my pink and white one pictured. And my other son wants a combination of blue white yarn.  As per the video, I plan to crochet 5-7 scarves for myself so I can wear one each day and change the scarf colour pending the outfit.  Scarf crocheting ...

The negatives of building miniatures

Image by Kerstin Riemer from Pixabay   I feel I have a love / hate relationship with miniatures. And it’s because of this feeling towards miniatures that I can go for months without building miniatures.  Here are the reasons why it can be a negative experience: It falls apart in your hands  When building a chair for example, you hold the furniture in place, count twenty seconds, put the chair to the side and it falls apart.  Or after you have built the first chair, while the second chair is falling apart your hand accidentally hits the first chair and now both have fallen apart.  Now repeat this five times. Glue is messy to work with  Expect glue to be every where. All over your fingers and all over your board. I normally use card board but get embarrassed when shooting YouTube videos at littlemissmel23 and the cardboard has glue all over it from past miniature DIY creations.  Patience when building miniatures  I do not have a lot of it. But when...
