How to crochet a magic ring

Trust me when I say, it took me about a year to actually feel confident that I finally worked out how to crochet a magic ring.

Originally, I had no idea what a magic ring was and I tried to avoid it like the plague. But guess what? Most patterns start with a magic ring.

So here is what I have learnt.

First, start with a slip knot.

Second when crocheting arigumani, it may not state this in the pattern but from what I have learnt over a long period of time is, to do two chains first. This is so important. Especially if the first instruction is to do a magic ring. You need the two chains first stitches first.

Now lean in for this very important part of the magic ring. In the first chain, you will want to do six single crochets in the same hole. That is how you create a flat circle.

If for whatever reason, your circle has a whole in the middle do not worry or start again. At the end of your creation simply sew in your long end of yarn from the beginning and sew it in the hole so there is no hole left.

The above is how I create my magic rings and it seems to work.

How do you know when a magic ring isn’t right?

It’s not flat.

The amount of times I started a magic ring and it curled is frustrating but doing the above, every time now I do the magic ring, it’s flat.

It’s not in a circle shape

If it’s rectangular or any other shape, the magic ring didn’t work. Re-read the instructions above and keep trying. That’s all that crocheting is, you keep trying and keep learning and growing.

The stitches are too tight

First off, make sure when you do your chains, that they are not too loose and not too tight. You need to get six stitches into the second chain, so it does need some room for those stitches. It just takes practice. Also, if you are still having trouble change your hook size to 5mm. Trust me, this helps.

Crocheting takes lots of practice and lots of watching multiple YouTube videos on how to do one stitch to find the right one that helps you understand and have it work! So stick with crocheting because it is hard but once you get a few stitches going, you will have a lot of fun and can start to plan what you want to create.

If you need to learn more stitches from a pattern than you know, just remember you learned so many stitches already, you can learn more! And if you don’t use them often, you can rewatch the YouTube teaching videos.

How I use my home for craft

So my home is decorated by my craft.  For example, I have a craft room where I store my craft supplies and have space to do my craft and then I have in my lounge room showing my craft creations (pictured above) and also storing craft supplies like yarn, where I love to look at and think about the possibilities of what I can do with my craft supplies.  It makes me feel good to come home and be surrounded by my craft.  And it’s ok to never have your craft room finished. For me it’s a work in progress. I am always changing it and my supplies and where to showcase my supplies. This is because my interests change. One month I may be heavily into crocheting so I don’t need a table for that, I can just sit on the couch. I really just need storage for my yarn and crochet needles and my half completed crochet projects such as draws to cater for these.  Another month, I may be into scrapbooking so I do need a table for this, my set of draws for the stickers and tapes and then ...

Crocheting my first blanket

So I decided that crocheting animals etc is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. And I found one. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant. So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled and realised after I do a row of single crochet stitches, I have to do one chain stitch at the end before ...
