Inside a writer’s life

I am a professional writer and I am going to take you into how I make time to write and share a bit of my writer’s life:

Every second weekend I spend brainstorming writing and then actually writing. I find that every second weekend is the best time to write for me. During the week I have a different full time job that I find I am too tired by the time I get home to write something. I also have a lot of night time commitments after work so writing unfortunately gets put aside.

But every second weekend I make time to write and write quality but also quantity.

Today for example, I was thinking of starting a business to be a digital magazine creator. I wrote three magazine issue topic ideas for every bit of content that would be included. I researched other magazines and similar category magazines to see the scale I could reach. I worked out the possible costs and outlays to start the business and get the proper set-up. I created an action plan of how many pages a week I would have to write and how many issues in advance would I have to write before the start of publishing the first issue. I brainstormed magazine names.

And then I pulled my focus away. I did some exercise. I had lunch. After 4-5 hours of brainstorming I realised a digital magazine wasn’t the option I wanted right now. I would still be open down the track but for now, I want to focus on blogging.

  • So I sat back down and brainstormed my new action plan. From October, I am going to publish six blog posts a week. This is to hopefully reach more views on my blog.
  • I also created a Facebook group called Hobbies I love (link below).
  • And I still want to write and publish an eBook regularly.

So that’s my plan. I don’t mind sharing this plan, because it may not work. Ha. But instead of outlaying everything for a digital magazine that may not work, at least my cost outlay for a blog is very low.

Plus, I really enjoy blogging. I don’t really have time to create and publish a monthly online magazine that would have over 40 articles inside. Maybe one day when I retire.

So I used to have 10 blogs. Over the year, I have stopped writing for all of them except this blog. This is because I always have so many ideas to write on this blog and it is my largest viewed blog out of all the others. I want to focus on this blog and I feel like I can blog daily if I want because I don’t also have the others to work for.

I initially had ten blogs because I wanted to make passive income from them and figured if I had 10 then I could make ten pathways for passive income instead of one. Now I realise, if I focus on growing my own one blog that I love to write for, then I have a higher chance of success.

It’s been a year and it’s had steady growth each month and I don’t really do a lot of advertising. So fingers crossed I can grow this blog and make it something you love as well. Because it’s all about you dear reader and what you want to read.

So back to my actual topic about a day in the life of a writer. Well it’s complicated. Because I want the best outcome for us all. For you and me. I want to give you the best information and fun content that hobbies give us and eventually I would like some passive income from it.

But I used to write 20 blogs every second weekend on ten blogs. I had two weeks worth of blog posts for each blog. Now I’m just doing 12 blog posts every second weekend.

Plus, I promote my blog posts on LinkedIn and Pinterest (see links below) to also help grow my audience.

And on that writing weekend, I also spend about an hour or more on an eBook.

So that’s what a writer’s life looks like when juggling a full time wage and family and the events of life. I hope you found this blog helpful for your own journey. You don’t have to write as much as me or as little. Just work out a set day to write and a goal of how much to write and go for it each week.

Crocheting my first blanket

So I decided that crocheting animals etc is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. And I found one. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant. So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled and realised after I do a row of single crochet stitches, I have to do one chain stitch at the end before ...

I crocheted my first scarf

If you are a subscriber to my hobbies YouTube channel @littlemissmel23, last week I posted a video on how to crochet a scarf. I couldn’t show the end result because it was already a long video, so I decided to show you on my blog. I have added the video to this blog post if you are interested in watching it for the pattern.  The final result: The final result is quite good I feel. I did a thin scarf and I ran out of pink yarn so I decided to add white. I’m quite proud of this scarf. I am going to play with the sizing and in particular the width of the scarf.  Now my kids have seen the first scarf, they are wanting me to make them one as well. They even chose the coloured yarn they want. One wants black and then white like my pink and white one pictured. And my other son wants a combination of blue white yarn.  As per the video, I plan to crochet 5-7 scarves for myself so I can wear one each day and change the scarf colour pending the outfit.  Scarf crocheting ...

Why you should scrapbook

I have only been doing for scrapbooking for about a year but I absolutely love it. Here’s why you should take it up: Photos  So I got a new phone and lost about half of my photos and videos from last year, even though I am paying for the iCloud. It’s ok, it’s just a harsh reality of using technology. I also save my photos to a hard drive, another downfall because that could break and then all my photos will be lost. So what’s the best way to ensure photos are kept - by printing them. I really believe this. And then worst case scenario if you have a fire and lose your printed photos, you still have the photos electronically and you can start again.  I worked out that for about 12,000 photos at 10c each to be printed, it will cost about $1200. But 12,000 photos is a lot and you would have to go through the ones you actually want to print which could drop it by half and that’s now $600.  Now you don’t have to pay for it in one large hit and to be honest the printing s...
