How to paint wall murals

Image by Engin Akyurt from Pixabay

Painting a wall mural is so much fun! And you can either keep it simple or make it how you want it.

To paint a wall mural

First design what you want to paint on an A4 page. Write down the colours needed and for what parts of the painting. Are you going to paint a wall mural on a single wall or have it cascade to multiple walls in the space?

If you have wall mural ideas for multiple rooms, just focus on painting the one room first before buying the resources for a second room. To ensure you like it.

What resources do you need to paint a wall mural?

So to paint a single room wall, you will need:

  • Sample paint, each colour comes in a small tub.
  • a fan,
  • and plastic for the floor. You don’t need it for the whole space, if you are just painting one wall.
  • Plus, painter’s tape to put down on the sides and top and bottom of the wall.
  • A painters brush, paint holder, and a paint roller
  • A pencil.
You basically need the same equipment as if painting the room one colour but instead of one colour you might have 5-10 paint colours.

How to prepare a room to paint

Add the painter’s tape to the start of the next wall up and down the sides of the wall. Add painter’s tape to the top edge of the ceiling and add painter’s tape the bottom. Also add tape wherever there is an object you don’t want to paint over, such as a light switch, an outlet or a door.

Then lay down the plastic to ground to cover the ground from paint. You may be surprised that some paint may drip from the top of the wall down the wall if you have too much paint on your brush or roller.

Using pencil, draw your design to the wall. This way you can use a rubber if you haven’t got the dimensions exactly how you want it. Note with using a pencil, if you press too hard it will leave a dint in your wall. So be gentle and barely touching the wall. You just want a faint line to give you some guidance.

After painting, set up your fan to help your room dry and open any windows to also help, as long as it is not raining outside.

How to paint a wall mural

There are two ways you can do this. You can paint the whole wall one colour, if the majority of the wall is one colour.

Or you can paint with the lighter colours first and then let it dry. Add painter’s tape to the lighter colours that you painted and is dry and add the darker colours around the lighter paint.

I have also painted words onto a wall mural before. To paint words, you can write them in painter’s tape and then at the end remove the tape and either leave it the current colour it is, or paint the word’s using the colour you want.

You can also use stencils to create your wall mural.
Basically any technique you use for painting a picture you can use on a wall. The paint is just thicker.

Remember the rules of painting a wall

If you use a dark background, it will make the room darker.
It’s still a decent size, so the size of any objects need to be thought out and that’s why pencil designing on your wall before you begin can help you to determine the right size for your wall.
Also, expect if you are using multiple colours l, it may take a week to complete the painting.

You don’t have to be a professional painter
I love painting and I love painting walls. I am not an artist or drawer. Just someone with ideas and a love to paint. So you don’t have to hire a professional painter for this wall mural.

How do you paint a wall mural if renting a house?

Well there are some ideas. You can buy three large canvases and paint on the canvases your mural. And then hang them up on the walls, by using those special frame holders that don’t leave a mark on your walls when you leave.

If you really feel you will be renting there for several years, you could ask the owner if you could paint a wall mural in a  room and you would pay all the expenses. Plus, you can advise them if you do leave you will paint the wall back to its original colour.

You can ask other home owners, if you can paint a wall mural in their house and get them to design it or show them your design suggestions. They may even pay for your paint resources to make it happen. Make sure you take a photo at the end. You could turn this into a job and add the end result photos to your portfolio to show other home owners.

At the end of the day, have fun with it. It can be as simple or as creative as you want it to be.

Reshuffling my craft space for scrapbooking

When you feel uninspired change up your craft space  So I haven’t been scrapbooking as much because I have a set of drawers with stickers, washi tape and other cool stationery and then I have my tub of scrapbooking paper in my cupboard.  I was thinking about what I could do to bring my scrapbooking closer. Here’s a photo of my tub of scrapbooking paper. Look how undesirable it looks. Inside I have large paper about A4 size and A3. Then I have 12x12 inch paper. Plus an ice cream tub full of scrap paper.  It just made me feel unsatisfied and what makes me excited to work on a hobby is that I can see the resources and get excited to get started. But this set-up was not empowering me. I started brainstorming about maybe making a craft space. I found a table from IKEA with draws on both sides that I could put my scrapbooking paper and accessories in as well as my diamond painting. I also found a desk backing which is like a three level high shelving that attaches to the table....

Crocheting my first blanket and how you can to

Finding a relaxing crochet project for beginners So I decided that crocheting animals etc. is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing it than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant.  Why single crochet blankets don't work without a chain stitch So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled an...
