What supplies do you need for crocheting?

So you have started crocheting. Crocheting is super fun and sometimes tricky and sometimes hard. Also, once you get started and if you are like me, you will have multiple crocheting projects happening at once.

There is a logical reason for this. Because you can have multiple projects at once because you may take different projects with you when catching public transport and have to go somewhere. So a smaller, easier project to pack is ideal and also it gives you something to do while you travel.

You may have bigger projects like blankets at home, because they are simply bulkier and heavy to carry. Plus, I prefer to crochet blankets at night, while I’m winding down and watching TV. Mainly because I don’t count stitches for my blankets.

So I tend to do crocheting arigumani in the morning or day time on the weekends, so I have a focussed mind to count those important stitches.

Ok, so that’s why you could have multiple crocheting projects. The other reason is you simply get bored half way through a project and prefer to work on something else and this is completely fine and understandable. Sometimes bigger projects take time and you might have to focus really hard on it. So taking a break and doing something quick and small is perfectly fine.

Right, so let’s get to the fun part! Shopping! Personally for most of my crocheting needs except for the yarn. I buy my supplies on AliExpress.com.

Please note, the links included in this blog post are affiliate links to AliExpress. This means if you buy something from there by clicking my link, I receive a percentage of the sale.

Crochet hooks

The reason I mentioned having multiple crocheting projects projects at once. Is because if you buy more than one hook. You can leave that hook with the project on hold. Especially if you use different size hooks. So you don’t have to remember which hook size you were using to complete the project.

I like to use one hook size, 5mm for all crocheting projects. This is what I am comfortable with. Most stores sell crocheting hook packs with different sizes.

So I found on AliExpress that you can buy multiples of the same hook size without buying a stack of different hooks in a pack.

Also, having multiple hooks is important because you may lose the one you are working on. Especially if you take it outside your home or even if you are in your home. It can fall down the back or sides of your chair. (Trust me this has happened multiple times to me).

The last thing you want to do is have to go do an emergency shop for another hook and spend double or sometimes triple the amount of what you could spend on AliExpress because you can’t find the hook.

Sewing needles

These aren’t actually sewing needles for the sewing machine. They are generally plastic and recently I bought a pack of 20 of different sized crocheting sewing needles for less than $3 AUD. That’s quite impressive.

And yes, these are small and they do get lost and you only get one in a pattern kit and I have lost all of those, so… a pack is needed!

Which brings me to my next special buy…

A yarn bag

You can place all your supplies of crocheting hooks and sewing needles in the yarn bag as well as your yarn!

For a blanket I could fit about ten - 14 yarns in the yarn bag. So if you have a project you are working on, you can place all the yarn in the bag.

Or if you want to take the yarn bag with you on your travels or you travel to work, you can put all your project necessities in the yarn bag.

Mine is pink. I really love it. I don’t really take it with me and I don’t fill it with yarn anymore. But I do fill it with my crochet hooks and sewing needles as well as an A4 exercise book which has my patterns in.

The yarn bag is great for beginners and crochet travellers.

Crochet pattern kits

Yes, I have bought a three in one crochet kit. It has a unicorn pattern, a bumble bee and a dinosaur. The pattern also comes with a step by step video you can watch and learn as you go.

The pattern kits come with the yarn of the patterns, a crochet hook and a sewing needle. Plus some stuffing.

I haven’t bought too many more crochet kits from AliExpress because I just use the pattern as I do with any kit I buy. But AliExpress does have a lot of pattern kits available such as flowers.

The yarn

I feel like, you choose what yarn you want to buy and use and get it from a shop you can buy multiples from for larger projects requiring the same colour.

So I won’t be listing where to buy yarn. I definitely recommend you practice using the yarn you want to buy lots of before placing a large order.

So have fun browsing for your crocheting supplies and you can take your time. You don’t have to buy from the links above, it’s just a suggestion of what I like to use.

Happy shopping!

Reshuffling my craft space for scrapbooking

When you feel uninspired change up your craft space  So I haven’t been scrapbooking as much because I have a set of drawers with stickers, washi tape and other cool stationery and then I have my tub of scrapbooking paper in my cupboard.  I was thinking about what I could do to bring my scrapbooking closer. Here’s a photo of my tub of scrapbooking paper. Look how undesirable it looks. Inside I have large paper about A4 size and A3. Then I have 12x12 inch paper. Plus an ice cream tub full of scrap paper.  It just made me feel unsatisfied and what makes me excited to work on a hobby is that I can see the resources and get excited to get started. But this set-up was not empowering me. I started brainstorming about maybe making a craft space. I found a table from IKEA with draws on both sides that I could put my scrapbooking paper and accessories in as well as my diamond painting. I also found a desk backing which is like a three level high shelving that attaches to the table....

Crocheting my first blanket and how you can to

Finding a relaxing crochet project for beginners So I decided that crocheting animals etc. is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing it than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant.  Why single crochet blankets don't work without a chain stitch So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled an...
