I admit I am one of those people who like to buy lots of yarn. I have lots of yarn but I also use lots of yarn. Ok to be honest the above photo is my Christmas yarn haul. I feel like I behaved as much as I could when buying this crocheting yarn haul. I literally had no red or caramel or brown yarn in my supplies and we are heading into Christmas, so I had to shop for Christmas yarn shop.
So how much should one buy of yarn at once?
Start buying the yarn you need for a crocheting project
Well when I first started crocheting, I just bought lots of single coloured yarn. You know, like one black, one white yarn, some colours that I was making like green and brown for a turtle but again just one yarn of each colour I needed.
Which is fine. I feel like it’s best to buy yarn that you have for a project in mind. But then I realised I could be in a project like a scarf and really I need two yarns of the same colour. And the biggest disappointment when you are crocheting a blanket and you run out of yarn mid way and have to wait a week or so for the store to top up.
Try not to buy crocheting yarn, just because
I also bought a lot of yarn at the beginning to just have random colours for no project in particular. I have a large tub filled with this yarn that I rarely use now. It’s been sitting there for two years. I have taken the yarn out of the tub so I can see what I have and it’s just colours I barely use. It’s frustrating that I have bits of yarn that I’m not even sure could go to a project, because it’s either not a full yarn or just one colour of that yarn so if I run out I may not be able to find that same colour. Like dusty pink for example.
For big crocheting projects, buy in bulk
Now I know, to just buy two of the same coloured yarn for one project, like crocheting a koala. I also don’t mind buying lots of white and black, because these are the colours most used for most projects.
For adult blankets I buy 14 coloured yarns of the colours I want to use for a blanket.
The price on yarn is dependent on how much you buy. For me, I buy my yarn at one place in bulk. It does depend on the projects I am working on, for instance, I recently bought four different coloured yarns and different amounts of the colour, for Christmas projects. I want to make a few this year so I need a decent amount of green, red, caramel and brown.
When you buy yarn you need a place to store it
It’s definitely exciting buying yarn. The downside is trying to find a place to put it. I like to see my yarn, so having too much yarn isn’t possible. But I am crocheting two blankets, so I have 28 yarns of two different colours.
I have about two tub fulls of yarn if I put them in tubs.
Did I buy too much? Not really. Because at least one tub full is for projects I am working on and going to work on. So buy the amount of yarn you actually need and maybe a few extra for the colours you want just to have.
You don’t want a whole tub full of yarn that you won’t use for years. Now I just need to think what am I going to use this yarn I have had for two years that I have no use for?
Of course I will use it. At some point. But I will use the other yarn I have for projects sooner.
Do I need to buy more yarn? Not at this stage but still I will once I have specific coloured yarn projects. Also if you do have yarn colours you haven’t used for a while, you don’t always have to use the same colours as a pattern does, spice it up and crochet a purple and green turtle or a pink jellyfish instead of blue.
Happy crocheting!
