How I use my small space for craft?

My old craft room space

I love craft, I used to have a craft room, with two tables one mainly for miniatures, so they would have a space to dry and space to work and have all my tools available in one place.

The second table, I would mainly use to host my huge diamond painting! It was the size of the table. I did move it around, so for whatever other craft I was using, I would use that second table.

Then, I moved out of that space and had a room with no doors, like an open area in a home. So I had three tables, a storage unit behind me and a set of five draws as well.

My craft was building, I had scrapbooking as a hobby and many many supplies. I had craft that I needed more space for, and storage to showcase once I made it.

It all sounds glamorous, having a full time craft space and I guess it is.

Now though, I think it feels better.

My current craft room space

Now I have a kitchen table or an outdoor table, where I can sit and write/blog/write. If you know my blog, you will know I write and publish novels and non-fiction novels, check it out here. I also blog five times a week, so writing is a pretty big hobby for me.

I also use my kitchen table for diamond painting. I like diamond painting because once I am done for the day, I can literally pack it back up and put it away.

I generally crochet, while I am on the lounge … it makes sense because I can watch TV while I crochet. However, I recently bought a pack of patterns online and need my computer to access the patterns. So for crocheting patterns, I sit at the table as well. It’s not as comfortable, but when I am crocheting my blankets, I can still sit on the couch because I don’t count stitches for it and can just relax while crocheting.

For scrapbooking, I have always been a homework being completed on the floor. And with all the supplies I have, the floor is the best place for me as I sit on a cushion.

Some my find this odd, I just find its easier than a table and again, once I am done, I move everything back in place so nobody can even tell I do scrapbooking as a hobby.

What do you want your craft space to look like?

So think about your space? And what would work for you?

Are you looking for a permanent craft room that can grow with you? You may also want to read my blog post on how much craft you should buy before you decide totake a break from craft shopping … I know, I know, that’s half the fun!

I personally like, that I can put my craft away after I use it and it goes back into storage. It also keeps all my craft supplies dust free and makes my place look tidy… even though, you can tell it’s a crafty home. For instance, I do love to see my yarn because it excites me to crochet more and to keep crocheting. So I have my yarn in view of when I sit on the lounge, so I can remind myself … hmmm, is it time for some crocheting? Yes. Yes, it is.

So let’s talk about craft … once you work out where you want to do your craft, you can then tailor your craft space and storage around it.

For instance, I have craft storage right next to my dining table. So if I want to do some diamond painting, its literally next to the dining table. If I don’t have to travel far to get it, then it’s a plus!

Yarn, is tricky. I have moved my yarn around 3 times and now I have it in a spot, where I literally can’t buy any more even if I really wanted to, which I always do. So that is also a reminder, that I have to use the yarn that I have already.

I have another small cupboard right next to my living room, where I store some of my scrapbooking supplies and I just bring it out when I work on it and then when I finish, I put it straight back. Simple!

Do I envy those who have a craft room? Sure. Do I love my current set-up? Yes! It’s designed for me, by me.

Do I need to declutter so I don’t feel overwhelmed … sure… maybe … I wrote a post on craft decluttering, if you are wanting to declutter, check out the blog post before you do.

The other point about setting up a craft space, is it does depend on if you own your own home, or if you are renting. As a renter, there are limitations to a craft room, such as no storage can be placed on the walls, unless you use a tall storage holder that holds from the ground.

So I completely get it, when it comes to your current craft space. Look around your current space, think about all your hobbies and what storage you need for each.

  • Can you put away your hobby after use?
  • Do you have somewhere it can sit when you put it away?
  • Or if you can have a craft room, what storage do you need for your hobby so it doesn’t sit on the table 24/7? But if you want it to sit on your table, then go for it. This is your space.

Creating a craft space is a journey and it’s really up to what works for you, on how it should be set-up. Plus, the fun part is, you can change your craft space multiple times, until you find what works for you. Enjoy the process.

How I use my home for craft

So my home is decorated by my craft.  For example, I have a craft room where I store my craft supplies and have space to do my craft and then I have in my lounge room showing my craft creations (pictured above) and also storing craft supplies like yarn, where I love to look at and think about the possibilities of what I can do with my craft supplies.  It makes me feel good to come home and be surrounded by my craft.  And it’s ok to never have your craft room finished. For me it’s a work in progress. I am always changing it and my supplies and where to showcase my supplies. This is because my interests change. One month I may be heavily into crocheting so I don’t need a table for that, I can just sit on the couch. I really just need storage for my yarn and crochet needles and my half completed crochet projects such as draws to cater for these.  Another month, I may be into scrapbooking so I do need a table for this, my set of draws for the stickers and tapes and then ...

Crocheting my first blanket and how you can to

Finding a relaxing crochet project for beginners So I decided that crocheting animals etc. is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing it than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant.  Why single crochet blankets don't work without a chain stitch So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled an...
