What is diamond painting?

^Please note in this post, I use affiliate links to AliExpress.com. This means if you buy something from my links, I receive a percentage of the sale.

Let me introduce you to a very relaxing and fun hobby, diamond painting.

I normally buy a diamond painting kit, so the kit comes with wax, a pencil for the drills, a sticky canvas and a drill holder. Some kits give you some bonus supplies, which are always useful. Oh and the kit will come with a number chart.

What does diamond painting do?

I started with colour by numbers then I found paint by numbers and then I found diamond painting, which is using the wax to stick to the pencil and then you can literally pick up the correct numbered coloured drill (diamond) and stick it to the correct number on the canvas.

Simple?

It is!

It is one of my most relaxing and easiest hobbies I do.

What is the outcome of diamond painting?

The result, once you finish adding all the drills to the canvas is a sparkly, cool picture to admire.

What do you do with the finished diamond painting?

There are many things you can do with a finished diamond painting:

  • You can frame it and put it out for display.
  • You can make it and then gift the diamond painting.
  • You can sell the diamond painting.
  • You can chuck it in a tub for dust free keeping.
  • You can cut around the edging and add it to an art book.
  • You can add the diamond painting to a display folder and have it on your coffee table to show others when they visit.
Really, there are many things you can do with it. Finding what to do with the result is just as fun as creating it.

And of course, you may want to be buy more!

So think of the best way to store your diamond paintings when you have more than one finished.

But also think about how to store your stash if you buy a few at a time. I have seen some impressive diamond paintings stashes on Facebook.

If you have a cool stash, share a pic on my Hobbies to love Facebook group!

I found this cool diamond paintings stash holder on AliExpress.com. I am thinking of buying it. I currently have 10 diamond paintings in my stash. I do take a very long time to complete one diamond painting because I have so many other hobbies to do.

Currently I have a bookcase style open storage where I have my stash out but I never look at it, so I’m never reminded to keep doing it! Whereas my crocheting yarn is right under my TV so I see it daily to remind me to keep crocheting. Same with my scrapbooking, it’s in my draws next to my TV.

So if you do need buy a stash think about where you can strategically place it so you see it on a regular basis to keep working on it.

Also the debate if squares or circle drills are better is always around.

So buy one square diamond painting and buy a different diamond painting that uses circles. Then decide which you prefer.

If you are using circle drills you can buy a ruler to help to keep your circle drills straight.

Between you and me, I am a square drill fan even though I feel it’s harder than circles. I feel the end result looks better.

Also, buy a small to medium sized diamond painting for your first go. Because if you don’t like the process or the end result you can try a different hobby.

Just know, in terms of sizing the picture looks more clear the bigger you get it. But to be honest, I have had a big one, a massive diamond painting before. It was so massive. And it was heavy. I spent two years diamond painting this one picture and never finished it. It was the length and size of one of my large craft tables. And to be honest, I didn’t know what to do with it once I finished with it.

In the end, I just gave up. I realised I still enjoyed the hobby, I just wanted to do a smaller size. So bought smaller diamond paintings from then on. So choose your size wisely.

How I use my home for craft

So my home is decorated by my craft.  For example, I have a craft room where I store my craft supplies and have space to do my craft and then I have in my lounge room showing my craft creations (pictured above) and also storing craft supplies like yarn, where I love to look at and think about the possibilities of what I can do with my craft supplies.  It makes me feel good to come home and be surrounded by my craft.  And it’s ok to never have your craft room finished. For me it’s a work in progress. I am always changing it and my supplies and where to showcase my supplies. This is because my interests change. One month I may be heavily into crocheting so I don’t need a table for that, I can just sit on the couch. I really just need storage for my yarn and crochet needles and my half completed crochet projects such as draws to cater for these.  Another month, I may be into scrapbooking so I do need a table for this, my set of draws for the stickers and tapes and then ...

Crocheting my first blanket

So I decided that crocheting animals etc is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. And I found one. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant. So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled and realised after I do a row of single crochet stitches, I have to do one chain stitch at the end before ...
