What is junk journaling versus scrapbooking?

So you may come across different language when it comes to scrapbooking, such as this term called junk journaling. They are two different types of versions of scrapbooking.

What is scrapbooking?

Scrapbooking, is taking photos and turning it into an album, using materials to scrapbook showcasing the photos. Scrapbooking is more personable. It doesn’t matter what theme you choose, or how you style the scrapbook, it is still scrapbooking.

What is junk journalling?

Junk journalling using receyled items, or items around the home, to create a journal or art book that may include one or two photos, but is more about creating art than showcasing an album. In a junk journal, you can create space to write and use it as a journal, or you can create each page with special art for each page. It is a bit more creative in a free form way but not really used as a personal album.

So let’s take 2 pages for scrapbooking and see what we come up with:

For example: Just say you are creating a baby album. On the two pages, say the album is A4 size. You decide you can fit two 6x4 inch sized baby photos on each page. Your baby is a boy. So you use a baby blue theme. You might add baby blue scrapbooking paper or coloured card paper as a background. You paste over the two photos and then add some baby blue washi tape to frame the photos. In the blank gaps you add some baby blue stickers, such as a baby rattle, a toy car etc). You might even decide to add some baby blue ribbon to border both pages. And woolah, you have created two scrapbooking pages for your album.

Now let’s look at two junk journal pages:

Generally, a junk journal is half the size of an A4 photo album. You open the junk journal and on the next two pages. You decide on a pink floral theme. On the first left page that you have opened, you add some light pink coloured card paper, then add some pink floral stickers. You might add some white lace and pink ribbon to the boarder. You might even add some dried flowers to the picture or 3D flowers.

On the second page, you use the same theme, but mix it up a bit. And still by adding the floral stickers but this time you add window frame stickers over the top of the floral stickers. Onto your light pink background. You can continue with the white lace and pink ribbon as a boarder. You might even add a miniature pink picket fence to the bottom of the page, to showcase the flowers even further.

Do you see the differences between scrapbooking and junk journalling?

With the scrapbooking, the photos are the feature. The scrapbooking album is generally flat based, to hold as many photos as it can.

With junk journal, you can create an art book, that includes different textures and sizes. It doesn’t have to be flat and it’s more fun if it isn’t.

Also, I want to really point out here, in terms of scrapbooking and junk journalling, there are no rules. So if you want to add a bit of both and make something combined, then do that. This is your art to showcase. So you have the full control of how your project will look.

How I use my home for craft

So my home is decorated by my craft.  For example, I have a craft room where I store my craft supplies and have space to do my craft and then I have in my lounge room showing my craft creations (pictured above) and also storing craft supplies like yarn, where I love to look at and think about the possibilities of what I can do with my craft supplies.  It makes me feel good to come home and be surrounded by my craft.  And it’s ok to never have your craft room finished. For me it’s a work in progress. I am always changing it and my supplies and where to showcase my supplies. This is because my interests change. One month I may be heavily into crocheting so I don’t need a table for that, I can just sit on the couch. I really just need storage for my yarn and crochet needles and my half completed crochet projects such as draws to cater for these.  Another month, I may be into scrapbooking so I do need a table for this, my set of draws for the stickers and tapes and then ...

Crocheting my first blanket

So I decided that crocheting animals etc is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. And I found one. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant. So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled and realised after I do a row of single crochet stitches, I have to do one chain stitch at the end before ...
