Hobbies to do with your children

Crafting hobbies is super fun and sometimes you need full focus to dive right in and just relax. But a shared experience is even more special, even if just done once together, you could create a special memory of bonding with your child, if you craft together.

Also you don't have to do some craft at the same time. So if your child is young, give them age appropriate crafts, while you can do the hobby you want.

Here are 3 cool hobbies you can do with your children:

1. Paint by numbers

So pending on your child's age, you can give them a sheet of white paper and some paints and let them finger paint. Or you can buy yourself and your child a paint by numbers kit. Look for simple paint by numbers. Super tiny sections are harder, so you want a picture that uses about 10 paint colours. Most are about 24 paint colours.

Buy both of you paint brushes. I don't know why, but I tend to not like the paint brushes in the kit. So I buy my own, where there are about 10 different sized paint brushes. Have a big plastic cup for water and some paper towels to dry the paint brush and you are both good to go.

You can also buy an easel for each of you. I find an easel helps you reach the entire canvas and holds it firmly in place.

Set the scene: Stand up the easels on a table. Play some relaxing, or feel good music. Set up the paints, the water cup and some paper towels. Add some lighting to see the numbers on the canvas, and enjoy time with your child painting.

2. Diamond painting

Kids as young as 7, can diamond paint. You can get easier diamond paintings for kids, such as Disney diamond paintings, or even Pokemon diamond paintings for the boys. Smaller sized ones like 20 or 25 cm are ideal for kids, as diamond painting takes a long time over many sessions. You choose the diamond painting you want to do.

Diamond paintings are super fun and relaxing.

Set the scene: Place the amount of diamond paintings per person. Buy small bags and have a couple of nikko pens. Write on the tags the colour numbers, so everyone knows where their colours are. Cut the drills and place inside the small bags. In the kit, you should receive a diamond painting pen, wax and a holder. Set it out next to the diamond painting. Add some of your favourite music and get crafting.

3. Reading

Reading is super relaxing and its nice to be able to all read books at the same time. You can either, read a book to your child, or get them to read a book while you read your own book.

Set the scene: Place a heap of cushions on the floor. Turn off all noise. Pending on your child's age, burn some candles or turn on some fake LED candles. Turn on some lamps or soft lighting. And set a timer if you want and enjoy some quiet together.

This may not seem like you are bonding, but I bet your child will enjoy a love of reading as they grow and remember these special moments they bonded together.

I hope the above shows you, it doesn't matter what the hobby is. If it's a craft hobby, buy your child a similar hobby that is age-appropriate and buy yourself the type and version you want and hobby together!

How I use my home for craft

So my home is decorated by my craft.  For example, I have a craft room where I store my craft supplies and have space to do my craft and then I have in my lounge room showing my craft creations (pictured above) and also storing craft supplies like yarn, where I love to look at and think about the possibilities of what I can do with my craft supplies.  It makes me feel good to come home and be surrounded by my craft.  And it’s ok to never have your craft room finished. For me it’s a work in progress. I am always changing it and my supplies and where to showcase my supplies. This is because my interests change. One month I may be heavily into crocheting so I don’t need a table for that, I can just sit on the couch. I really just need storage for my yarn and crochet needles and my half completed crochet projects such as draws to cater for these.  Another month, I may be into scrapbooking so I do need a table for this, my set of draws for the stickers and tapes and then ...

Crocheting my first blanket

So I decided that crocheting animals etc is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. And I found one. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant. So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled and realised after I do a row of single crochet stitches, I have to do one chain stitch at the end before ...
