How to prepare for Christmas gift giving

Image by Jess Bailey from Pixabay

Ok, so you love craft! That is great. Christmas is one of the holidays, where you can craft as much as you want and give as gifts.

If you work in an office: You could make gifts for your co-workers and boss.

If you have a family: You can spend time making gifts for them, especially for children, extra gifts for their Santa sacks.

If you have extended family that you may only see once a year at Christmas: you could make them home made gifts.

If your children attend school: You can make their teachers a home made gift.

Making home made gifts, is sharing your talents to those you care about, hoping to brighten someone's day. A home made gift is special and sweet. Most people, love receiving home made gifts.

So let's work on a bit of a guide on how to prepare for all these homemade gifts you want to make:

  • First off, write a list of everyone you want to make a gift for.
  • Now choose what you will make. You might make different things for different people or different groups.
  • Write down how long each gift will take to make.
  • Write down when you need to finish each gift. As you might see some people before Christmas day.
  • Work out how many hours a week you will need to create these gifts before your deadlines
Now think about, is it too much to make before your Christmas deadlines? If you had to cut out people this year, who is left? And if you do achieve all the Christmas gifts to those who are most close to you, you may end up having time to make more gifts for the others who you thought you may not have time to make for. By the way, it is completely ok to not be able to make everyone a gift. I generally want to give everyone a gift, but then just choose about 6-8 people and focus on making them a gift.

Time is precious and the last thing you want is to stress about making Christmas gifts. Gift giving is meant to be joyous not stressful. So don't overburden yourself with too much home made gift giving.

Ok now you have your plan on when and what to make those closest to you.

Now you need all the materials for your gift making. Even when I wanted to crochet Christmas decorations for my home this Christmas, I realised something very important... I had no Christmas yarn. I had no red, green or caramel colours. The prime colours for Christmas. So yes do check what you have and then buy what you are missing. This may cut into your craft time, so you may need to add an extra hour or two to another day or night to complete your deadlines.

If you do have some spare crafting time and looking to make the gift extra special. Buy my book, Melanie Toye's handmade Christmas crafts to learn how to create Christmas gift tags, handmade Christmas wrapping paper and more. Then wrap your hand made gift with handmade gift wrapping. Just to make it extra special.

Reshuffling my craft space for scrapbooking

When you feel uninspired change up your craft space  So I haven’t been scrapbooking as much because I have a set of drawers with stickers, washi tape and other cool stationery and then I have my tub of scrapbooking paper in my cupboard.  I was thinking about what I could do to bring my scrapbooking closer. Here’s a photo of my tub of scrapbooking paper. Look how undesirable it looks. Inside I have large paper about A4 size and A3. Then I have 12x12 inch paper. Plus an ice cream tub full of scrap paper.  It just made me feel unsatisfied and what makes me excited to work on a hobby is that I can see the resources and get excited to get started. But this set-up was not empowering me. I started brainstorming about maybe making a craft space. I found a table from IKEA with draws on both sides that I could put my scrapbooking paper and accessories in as well as my diamond painting. I also found a desk backing which is like a three level high shelving that attaches to the table....

Crocheting my first blanket and how you can to

Finding a relaxing crochet project for beginners So I decided that crocheting animals etc. is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing it than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant.  Why single crochet blankets don't work without a chain stitch So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled an...
