I remember my Great Aunty having this tiny place. I was only young but when I walked into her craft space, it felt magical.
It wasn’t even necessarily tidy. There was fabric dangling over a table. Just lots of pale pink and white lace everywhere. I can’t really recall what exactly was in her craft room, because it was about thirty years ago that I saw it. (She has sadly passed away).
And then her tiny tiny tiny patio was filled with plants at all levels some hanging, some on the ground. And a tall easel with paints on the ground and a stool. She was a painter.
This woman, who was well into her retirement stage. Living by herself with a cute dog. Had it all in my eyes. She had created a home (probably in hindsight it was a detached one bedroom unit) and it was filled with so much joy and magic.
I will forever always want to create a magical hobby space for myself. No matter how small and tiny a house I may live or how grand a house I may live. It will be a priority. Currently my craft space seeps into every part of my house, because I have lot of supplies. *Insert shrug shoulders* “When you love hobbies and even if it’s just one hobby, you are going to have a lot of supplies to create that hobby.”
I could look and idle over many different craft rooms online, because I love them all. You know why? Because that person who uses that craft room, is creating a space for themselves exactly how they want it. Even if they change it multiple times (and they will because it is fun!) the craft / hobby space is still a part of who they are.
It’s always a place where you can style it to be resourceful for your type of hobby/hobbies. Where you have certain storage that only works for your type of craft. It also may be a place, where you leave it in working order and close the door on the “mess that outsiders would see it as but the creative art it truly is.”
Or on the flip side, it could be kept completely impeccable. To help each day as you open the door to think of the possibilities you can make with your hobby in the space you have.
I have always as a child, create on the floor in my room. I didn’t have a desk but I felt a desk would be too constrictive for my creative ideas. I needed lots of paper, sprawled out across the floor. A pen and that was it. I would create. And that is how I did my homework, assignments and even in my senior school years, I did have a desk and I still did my creative and school assignments on the floor.
For me, I have always appreciated something bigger. If I had a choice to brainstorm my ideas in a small exercise book or a large scrapbook, then I would choose the large scrapbook. Why? Because I felt myself breathe deeper to a feeling of giddy and excitement at what thoughts I might create through my brainstorming on a typical situation.
Decades later. I found boxes and boxes of notebooks. One box filled with notebooks of my goals. And not just of my yearly goals but the endless daily tracking of my goals. If I was going to exercise I would write down every fitness exercise and how many reps I would do and then how many times I would repeat the number of reps. That’s probably how I landed with a four-pack on my stomach. Endless repetition, towards a goal.
And then I also found boxes of notepads filled with my dreams. Some were grand like a scrapbook, filled with cut out magazine pictures (the world before Pinterest) in different rooms in a mega mansion I would have after winning lotto. (Still waiting on the win!)
Why is this important?
Because it’s not what you create. It’s that you create as often as you can, as much as you want and it doesn’t matter the outcome or the space, but what matters is at the end of it all… it felt magical and it brings you joy. Because you know and only you know, how hard it was to get you to the end result. You know that you could have gave up at any moment. But you didn’t. You know that now it’s finished, it’s something that you will treasure and look back on fondly and say, “I made that.”
So no matter how big or small your space is for your hobby. When you sit down in that space. Know this is your space to create magic and joy.
Now, one more thing. If you do decide to release what you made for someone else, either paid or as a gift. Know that you are extending that magical and joyful feeling to that person. How awesome a feeling is that?
