So, a routine is when you want to do something on a regular basis to in the end achieve something.
So how do hobbyists and crafters need a routine?
Routines are good for those with limited time or those with ample time. Ok, a routine is for everyone. You can also set boundaries during your routine for your hobby. For example, I will not focus my attention during this time for hobbies on any cleaning or other things to do around the home. I will also not book appointments or events during this time because this is my hobby time. Obviously, you can be flexible. But if you book one hour every Saturday to do your hobby but then book other things in, you lose that precious one hour for your hobby and then might have to wait a whole week to try again.
So because I have so many hobbies, I try to focus on a routine that works for them all.
For example:
I write about on this hobbies blog and actually work on, crocheting, scrapbooking, diamond painting, reading and writing.
So here's my 2026 routine:
For morning's where I travel, I can crochet simple crocheting, such as blankets and scarves. This is about 45 - 60 minutes.
For night time, a couple night's a week. I crochet a blanket project. Because once they are half way made, they get quite heavy and can't take them travelling with me.
During my lunch times, I tend to feel tired and like to read. I mostly read my books on my phone. It helps me relax and unwind and prepare for the afternoon.
On my weekends, generally I will focus on crocheting amigurumi. I need to focus when crocheting amigurumi because I have to count stitches. So the weekend is ideal for this and I can work on a small 30 minute project or a 2 hour project. Whatever I want to crochet on the day. I also like to scrapbook, I do maximum 4 pages of scrapbooking a week. I find that it's quite creative and tires me out, thinking of ideas to make it look good.
I also spend about an hour diamond painting. I find this relaxing but genreally don't do more than an hour because that's when the body feels uncomfortable.
I also spend every second weekend, writing and scheduling these blog posts. So every second weekend I write 10 blog posts for 2 weeks in advance. It's not as hard as it sounds and I love being 2 or more weeks in advance in case I get sick and can't write one week.
Behind the scenes of a writer
I also spend most mornings while traveling or evenings, sharing my blog posts on my social media channels. And I am aiming to create 4 digital Etsy products a week to build up my online store. Which I love, because it's a creative outlet for me to actually sell my creative ideas. You can view my Etsy products at my store here. It depends on the digital product, some can take about 2 hours to fully create, create images of the product and write the description and promote and others take a lot longer.
So yes, some would say, my routine is hectic. But it is flexible. If things cross over, I just add it to a more quiet weekend that is coming up. I like to be create. So if I can create than I feel good. It doesn't feel like work to me. It's just fun. Plus I hope people love my products just as much as I had fun creating them.
Oh, and I also write books! You can view my 10 eBooks for sale here. I don't like niche's I generally write about what I want to write about, when I want to write about it. And somewhere I just fit it in...
So think about what your hobby is and when you want to make time for it during each week. Plus the boundaries you will put in place when you have them. Make sure you communicate these boundaries to family and friends.
Have fun hobbying in the New Year!
