Crocheting faces onto Amigurumi as a beginner

Image by carla Bron from Pixabay

So...

When I started crocheting amigurumi I crocheted faces ... as a beginner.

Which is great!

No one should fear crocheting faces ...

Although, as time and experience continued to grow, I started to drop the faces. I felt that some of the crochet creations were ruined by the crocheted face.

Then of course, I crocheted heaps of amigurumi in the year and you wouldn't believe it, non-crocheters would say, "Hey, a face would have been great to have been added."

I was shocked... what do non-crocheters even know about the face? But deep down it was because, I just lost confidence with faces.

And fair enough, to me, it could ruin a perfectly good amigurumi that I spent a few hours to a few days crocheting.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the faces issue... do you crochet faces? How long have you been crocheting faces? Is the face always the same, or do you change it up with the eyes, nose and smile? Do you even use different colours in your faces?

Honestly, I made a panda once and it wasn't great... it was when I was a beginner. And I added some eye brows. A friend of mine didn't like it. I did like it. I thought it was super cute. So then I cut the entire face and started again and then made it worse. So I cut it again and then crocheted what the original face looked like.

Because I don't know about you, but when I cut off the black yarn against a white yarn head, the black yarn remnants still show through the white yarn. So you have to replace it with a new face.

I think that's partly why I get nervous doing faces ... the scrutiny and obviously if the face isn't great then the whole crochet amigurumi is not great. In my opinion.

Also, should I care so much about people's opinions? To be honest, when you are starting out... you sort of do care. Because you put all this time and focus into it, if it doesn't look amazing, it sort of is a let down. But we shouldn't place that expectation on ourselves, especially when starting.

And when we are starting, we should be practicing faces as much as possible. For example, I crocheted 20 suns for gifts for Christmas... and because I have this slight fear of faces, I was going to practice on them with all different faces and honestly, no-one would have cared, if they had faces or not on them. I should have, the suns only took 30 minutes to make. Adding a face to crochet amigurumi already made, would have been easy. I let laziness or the fear take over and I also had a lot of other crocheting objects I wanted to make before Christmas... so I didn't put faces on the suns.

So is this year, going to be the year of faces... sure. Why not?

My crocheting is getting better and even on my crocheting projects that fail... why not add a face? Even if I am going to chuck it after? Why not?

So what I am trying to say is, whatever is stopping you and especially if it is faces. Watch some YouTube videos on how to crochet faces. Do your research and then just practice, practice, practice. You can only get better. And one day, you will crochet a face and say, that was fun and goodness it looks too cute.

Crocheting my first blanket and how you can to

Finding a relaxing crochet project for beginners So I decided that crocheting animals etc. is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing it than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant.  Why single crochet blankets don't work without a chain stitch So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled an...

How I use my home for craft

So my home is decorated by my craft.  For example, I have a craft room where I store my craft supplies and have space to do my craft and then I have in my lounge room showing my craft creations (pictured above) and also storing craft supplies like yarn, where I love to look at and think about the possibilities of what I can do with my craft supplies.  It makes me feel good to come home and be surrounded by my craft.  And it’s ok to never have your craft room finished. For me it’s a work in progress. I am always changing it and my supplies and where to showcase my supplies. This is because my interests change. One month I may be heavily into crocheting so I don’t need a table for that, I can just sit on the couch. I really just need storage for my yarn and crochet needles and my half completed crochet projects such as draws to cater for these.  Another month, I may be into scrapbooking so I do need a table for this, my set of draws for the stickers and tapes and then ...
