So you want to write?! That is awesome. Congratulations you have decided to enter the world of ideas, brainstorming and creating worlds that never existed.
So where do you begin if you want to write?
First off, everything you write you may feel is not good enough and it actually might make you want to quit before you start. I’m here to tell you, what you write is good enough! It might even be great!
So why not try it out? The best part, if you are really worried, you don’t even have to show anyone.
So just start writing. I would suggest, to write in a notepad with a pen first. Especially if you have barely written much in your whole life. Because using a pen, I find, feels so much more easier to create then just typing away.
Just write as much as you feel each week. It doesn’t have to be long and it could even be one sentence. It doesn’t matter. Nobody is watching you, remember?
Things to think about when writing...
Don’t focus on a niche. So many people say focus on a niche. I am living proof that niches aren’t always the correct path to making sales down the track when you finish a book or ten.
I used to be a freelance business writer and when I googled how to become a freelance business writer, choose a niche. I decided to go against the grain. I wanted to write about an array of topics and industries and I did. I wrote about mortgages, private charter, tax, photography, a kids toy business, a kids events business, real estate and so much more. If I chose a niche from the beginning, I probably wouldn’t have received any work!
So throw that idea out the window… unless of course, you want to write about one genre for the next few years and that is completely okay.
I am all for, writing about what I want to write about. That’s why I have so many different type of books. A mix of fiction and non-fiction. Which in itself is strange to some people. I had a person come up to me and ask how my books were going. I said, I’m working on a non-fiction book and they were shocked and said but you write fiction.
Yep.
I actually think it takes a bit of talent to write different genres and different categories of books. I’m quite proud of myself. So I suggest to you this:
“Write what you want to write - all the time.”
So at the beginning - choose the genre you want for your first book, but don’t commit to the genre for the rest of your writing career because it may change.
Also, writing is a time for exploring. Get curious and write. Explore the story. Explore each scene. Explore the characters and write how they respond to the situation.
Writing at the beginning is all about exploring. You are creating this entire new story. You have to explore and get curious. Plus ask your characters some serious questions and let them answer throughout your story of their intentions.
Yes, I know this must sound weird but some writers like me, just let the characters create the story.
It sounds weird… but once your characters become alive in your mind to create this story, sometimes you want them to choose the lover of your choice for example, but you know deep down… they would choose the other person as their lover. Sigh. Fine you win! Haha
This is why writers have so much fun!
How often should you write?
Also for beginners and anyone really, I would suggest you commit to writing once a day. You can set a certain time or you can just say every morning, afternoon or evening, I will write.
And don’t worry about word count right now. Just have fun and do some writing for play. Play with a character, what do they look like, what’s their personality… see ask questions about who they are and then answer them and soon you will get a detailed picture in your mind of this character and how they respond to certain jibes from their friends or enemies or what they love and what they hate. It’s pretty fun actually.
Then chuck in a dilemma… now… how is your character going to react when they hit this dilemma?
So you have these questions about every step of your story to a final outcome.
To be honest with you, I created this fiction writing online course for beginners course and I think it’s totally awesome because it guides you through out each path you go through from the start to the end of writing your book and then even helps with ideas on marketing after you get published, whether the traditional or self-published pathway.
So what are you waiting for? Write today and tomorrow and the next day!
