How to make a writing routine

Image by Peter Olexa from Pixabay

How to make a writing routine is always tricky to begin with.

So you want to be a writer and you want to write on a regular basis.

I would suggest when starting, create time on your weekend (if you work Monday - Friday), or create time on the days you have off work/studies. One hour. Start with one hour. This doesn't mean you sit down and write for one hour. It could mean, brainstorming ideas for what you want to write. Or plotting a story and the chapters within. Just one hour. Put your timer on and this is your allocated time to write. Now do this on the same day of each week for 30 weeks. Your routine is now set.

For plotting new stories, you may be interested in "My Book Planner" Printable Templates which helps you create your story idea.

Once you master writing for one hour a week ... you might be looking to add more writing to your routine. So you decide to add 15-30 minutes to write each day. When you are such a creative, that writing helps you breathe. It's important to make time to write, to give your ideas the freedom they seek - by being written.

This is where it gets tricky. Where do you find time in your day, even just 30 minutes??

Because after a day of work/study, you are tired. You have a set routine already. Cook dinner, eat, watch TV. Go to bed.

What about the morning?

The morning may be more frantic, as you try to wake up on time and then scramble out the door.

What about lunch?

After you heat up lunch, you may only have 15 minutes left. Perfect - add in your 15 minutes there.

Now what about any travel to your work/studies?

If you catch a train or tram, this can be the perfect time there. You may be able to find 15 - 30 minutes on public transport.

Ok, so what about speaking your novel out loud?

Hmm... this may seem a bit weird at first ... but what if, you go for a walk every day. It may be 30 - 60 minute walk. What if, you turned on your microphone or some note app. And speak into the app while you walk, creating a story.

The benefit is, you can create a story, while you exercise and you don't have to find 30 minutes out of your day. You are just multi-tasking. You can either come home and write the notes, pay someone to write the notes for you if you send them the file, or use an app that transcribes the recording into notes. (Yes, those apps are out there!)

Now, instead of an hour a week of writing. You are actually spending 3 hours and 30 minutes a week writing on your new routine of 30 minutes of writing a day. You see your story growing and perhaps on weekends, you may even spend a bit more time writing.

Writing is fun, when you write. When you stop writing for a while and we all do it, our life seems to lack something and that's because we are getting our creative fill. So write today.

Reshuffling my craft space for scrapbooking

When you feel uninspired change up your craft space  So I haven’t been scrapbooking as much because I have a set of drawers with stickers, washi tape and other cool stationery and then I have my tub of scrapbooking paper in my cupboard.  I was thinking about what I could do to bring my scrapbooking closer. Here’s a photo of my tub of scrapbooking paper. Look how undesirable it looks. Inside I have large paper about A4 size and A3. Then I have 12x12 inch paper. Plus an ice cream tub full of scrap paper.  It just made me feel unsatisfied and what makes me excited to work on a hobby is that I can see the resources and get excited to get started. But this set-up was not empowering me. I started brainstorming about maybe making a craft space. I found a table from IKEA with draws on both sides that I could put my scrapbooking paper and accessories in as well as my diamond painting. I also found a desk backing which is like a three level high shelving that attaches to the table....

Crocheting my first blanket and how you can to

Finding a relaxing crochet project for beginners So I decided that crocheting animals etc. is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing it than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant.  Why single crochet blankets don't work without a chain stitch So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled an...
