What is a hobby?

Image by Jose Antonio Alba from Pixabay

"A hobby is something you do or make that gives you time to yourself."

Whatever hobby you choose. A hobby carves out time for yourself to immerse yourself in something special. Creativity is at the core.

There are many types of hobbies you can start.

Here are ten hobbies you can start today:

1. Crocheting

2. Scrapbooking

3. Diamond Painting

4. Reading

5. Writing

6. Gardening

7. Miniatures

8. Painting

9. Drawing

10. Building

The above is 10 cool hobbies, the top 5 is what I feature on my blog now. But you can do anything as a hobby. As long as you love it, it's a hobby. It's not about how much it costs to hobby. It doesn't matter how much space it takes in your home or garage or outdoors. It brings a smile to your face when you talk about it to others and you feel good when doing the hobby. You could spend hours a week working on your hobby or even just 5 or 10 minutes. It doesn't matter how much time you spend on it, if it brings you joy it's a hobby.

What to do with your hobbies once complete?

Once you have completed your hobby. You just need to work out if you want to keep it for yourself, give it away or sell it. If you really hate, you can chuck it. You have my full permission. But whatever you choose, I would definitely take a photo of it first.

Where do you find information about your hobby to start?

When starting a new hobby, it's important to find the right resources and tools and learn how to make your hobby. For example, with miniature houses, I had to have a box of tools, including a glue gun and glue, craft glue, fabric glue and normal paste glue. Plus, cutting tools, a ruler, a paper cuter and scissors. Just as a starting point. Plus, I needed the minaiture kit I was going to use or you can make your own miniature items, using recycled goods, such as cardboard, paper, fabric etc.

For hobbies like gardening, you might like to research first, what plants do well in your countries climate. For example, in Australia, I have found the only plants that work for me and never die are succulents. They are hardy plants and if I forget to water them they seem to survive. But if you want something flowery, best to do your research to know even what time of year might be best to buy the plant. So researching your hobby before you buy the kit is important to understand what you need to complete the kit.

Most kits, do have all the tools needed to go with the project. For example, a crochet kit, has a hook, stuffing, the pattern and the yarn to use in a project. Some may even include a sewing needle and if you are lucky, eyes and stitch markers. But if you read my blog regularly, you will know I use all my own materials when I buy a kit, I just use the kit for the pattern.

Where to store your supplies?

You can view my blog post on how I use a small craft space for tips on hobby storage. At the beginning, you might not need much storage. It's once you discover that this hobby is for you that you decide to grow your hobby supplies that you might need more storage space for the resources. At the beginning, definitely do not buy six months worth of the hobby. This is because you may not enjoy as much as you thought you would. But after doing a couple of projects, then you can decide to buy more supplies in advance. Here is a blog post, where I help you work out how much craft supplies you should have before you buy more for your hobby.

So now you are ready to start a hobby?

Excited!? I hope so! Have fun!

How I use my home for craft

So my home is decorated by my craft.  For example, I have a craft room where I store my craft supplies and have space to do my craft and then I have in my lounge room showing my craft creations (pictured above) and also storing craft supplies like yarn, where I love to look at and think about the possibilities of what I can do with my craft supplies.  It makes me feel good to come home and be surrounded by my craft.  And it’s ok to never have your craft room finished. For me it’s a work in progress. I am always changing it and my supplies and where to showcase my supplies. This is because my interests change. One month I may be heavily into crocheting so I don’t need a table for that, I can just sit on the couch. I really just need storage for my yarn and crochet needles and my half completed crochet projects such as draws to cater for these.  Another month, I may be into scrapbooking so I do need a table for this, my set of draws for the stickers and tapes and then ...

Crocheting my first blanket and how you can to

Finding a relaxing crochet project for beginners So I decided that crocheting animals etc. is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing it than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant.  Why single crochet blankets don't work without a chain stitch So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled an...
