About Melanie Toye

Well I have to say, I’m slightly embarrassed… normally when I start a blog the first post I create is an about me and an introduction to my blog. It appears and I could be wrong, that I haven’t created this yet for my hobbies blog. I think I did initially in my tabs and had one but then removed it and forgot all about it. No biggy. I will share with you now.

If you have read some of my blogs, you would learn about me and my journey and stories in between the midst of blog posts. But let’s write the full scope here:

Hi, I’m Melanie Toye. I am a professional writer and hobbyist. I am an author of currently 10 books and I run an Etsy store selling hobby digital products that only help my readers. I am also the blog owner and writer of this blog Melanie Toye’s Hobbies.

My hobby blog is based on crocheting, scrapbooking, diamond painting and writing. My books for sale are fiction, non-fiction and children’s books.

I used to write for 7 years and did a range of writing from writing and publishing my own books, to creating and publishing my own online magazine called Imagine This for a year, plus script writing and I was also a freelance business writer and wrote for an array of industries. With freelance writing I had a 95% referral rate.

I then took a 7 year gap as my computer crashed, I got burn out from life events and I hampered down on my hobbies. I just needed to relax and bring joy to my life.

People don’t tell you but when I was writing, I was also working in another job and I was bringing up small children and I just had to make time to write. I also had so many ideas for writing and making products. It was hard to keep up to my own desires to write.

I took a break and then realised writing is who I am. Writing has a very strong attachment to me. I can’t give it up. As I started this hobby blog with boundaries, just by writing two hours a fortnight, the ideas started to come back.

I then wanted to write about all different topics, so I created 10 blogs. Boosting my writing from 2 hours to 4 hours a fortnight. Still achievable and not pushing myself too hard. It was an enjoyable amount of time.

And then life turns a corner, now the ideas flood to me but isn’t of writing and creating as soon as an idea comes. I write the idea down and then when it’s time to write I focus on the idea. The excitement of the idea hasn’t died down, it’s still there, strong as ever.

It’s been 18 months and I wrote and published 2 books. I also now write solely on this hobbies blog five times a week. Plus, I have created my own Etsy store, which I had always dreamed of making digital products and have an array of crocheting, scrapbooking, diamond painting, writing, self-care digital products and more to help people with their hobbies and their day.

I have also started creating online guides and classes, which I am incredibly proud about. I feel confident I do have the knowledge of a subject matter expert to provide the content for an online course. And I want to share my knowledge and experience with people who are just starting their journey.

I still have another job full time and look after my children who are slightly older but life hasn’t changed, my life still evolves around them.

So that is a bit about me.

I hope you enjoy reading my blog posts and look at my Etsy store for some inspiration.

Crocheting my first blanket and how you can to

Finding a relaxing crochet project for beginners So I decided that crocheting animals etc. is pretty stressful. Not really stressful but not relaxing. A cool end result but I wanted to find something to crochet where I didn’t have to count the stitches or focus on the different type of stitches. So I decided to crochet a simple blanket.  I just wanted to use a small amount of stitches and not count them. I didn’t want to do anything fancy. But I still wanted to crochet. I believe if I could find something to stitch that I could just relax doing it than it was worth it. I started googling a simply blanket planet using single crochet stitch. It’s simple start off with the first row with a chain stitch and then turn it over and do the rest with a single crochet stitch. Brilliant.  Why single crochet blankets don't work without a chain stitch So I started crocheting a baby blanket. It didn’t work out. The sides were uneven and the blanket was all different lengths. So I googled an...

How I use my home for craft

So my home is decorated by my craft.  For example, I have a craft room where I store my craft supplies and have space to do my craft and then I have in my lounge room showing my craft creations (pictured above) and also storing craft supplies like yarn, where I love to look at and think about the possibilities of what I can do with my craft supplies.  It makes me feel good to come home and be surrounded by my craft.  And it’s ok to never have your craft room finished. For me it’s a work in progress. I am always changing it and my supplies and where to showcase my supplies. This is because my interests change. One month I may be heavily into crocheting so I don’t need a table for that, I can just sit on the couch. I really just need storage for my yarn and crochet needles and my half completed crochet projects such as draws to cater for these.  Another month, I may be into scrapbooking so I do need a table for this, my set of draws for the stickers and tapes and then ...
